John McCain
After Being Released as Prisoner of War
3/14/1973
Almost free; John McCain, a naval aviator, was shot
down and captured by the North Vietnamese while flying
a bombing mission on October 26, 1967. Held for five
and a half years, McCain endured torture and solitary
confinement before his release on March 14, 1973.
McCain, facing the camera, just to the left of the bus,
was photographed with other prisoners at their release.
