Page 99 - Stand Down Vietnam
P. 99
I got there (Vietnam) in July ’68, after the Tet
Offensive. People were still a little bit scared. I
made it a point to carry a big screwdriver with me; if
I was to get in a fight, I was going to poke somebody,
it was a defensive measure. Perhaps supervisors knew
where the weapons were, but I never knew. I think they
were concerned we’d be playing around and accidentally
shoot our weapons and damage the aircraft.
Sometimes I write stories about my own experiences,
nothing big. My advice to others is to do your best;
learn a trade, whatever it is, do your best.
Today, I think the way people feel about our Veterans
is changing. You know, we wear our hats that show we
are Vietnam Veterans; at least once or twice a week,
you go downtown and meet people that want to shake your
hand and say thanks for your service. The men and the
women and even the little kids say it.
