EIGHTY-NINTH INFANTRY DIVISION
"THE ROLLING 'W'" AND "THE MIDDLE WEST DIVISION"
The 89th Infantry Division's nickname, the "Rolling W," is founded on the division's insignia. The insignia
was created during WWI; it displays the letter "M" inside a wheel. When turned, the "M" becomes a "W."
The letters "MW" denotes the Midwest origin of the majority of the troops who formed the 89th during
WWI.
The uniform patch background color differed by individual units:
177th Infantry Brigade - sky blue background
353rd Infantry Regiment
354th Infantry Regiment
341st Machine Gun Battalion (half sky blue/half scarlet)
178th Infantry Brigade - navy blue background
355th Infantry Regiment
356th Infantry Regiment
342nd Machine Gun Battalion (half navy blue/half scarlet)

Engineers - scarlet background edged with white.
