I was presented the Purple Heart while teaching at the Missouri Military Academy.

My discharge from the service took place at Jefferson Barracks Military Post in Lemay, Missouri – just
south of St. Louis, Missouri.

After my discharge I enrolled for the winter semester at The Ohio State University. It was at Ohio State
that I met my future wife. I married Lorraine Ditzler in April,1948. We have four children, six
grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

I did not talk much about the war until I joined the Ex-Prisoners of War Association. My children were not
aware that I had a purple heart or that I had been a POW. Many of our friends also did not know.
