Daughter Cindy Remembers ...
Camping with Dad was fun 'til the chiggers came along. After we had bright
red dots all over, nail polish put on them to kill them. Fireworks were great
memories; we mostly just did those on the holiday. If you put enough little
stuff together you can have a good display! We had great fun at Disneyland. I
grew up sleeping on sugar and flour sacks. I was told that one time I was out
front, and the cop Dick Lee walked in, a very big guy with a big cigarette. I
called him pregnant! Dick Lee just laughed. Dad was a hardworking man,
bull-headed, a Sergeant, my friends feared him. I gained respect for him as I
got older.
Best Friend Mark Remembers...
Tom is the best friend I've met in a long time. I often worry about him. He
always talks sensibly to me. I call him "dad." I always had the best times with
Thomas. Barbecuing together was the best time, also a trip to Wisconsin
fishing-for Chinook salmon. We had a great camp for three couples on the
harbor close to the dock and a charter boat-- an expensive trip but fun. We
wanted to go back when the king salmon started running but we didn't make it
back.
Son -in -Law Russ Remembers...
I like the story about the empty silo. My father in law wanted it down because
it wasn't in the best of shape. Thomas said he'd take it down; he'd try
anything! He got a twenty- or fifteen-pound mall and took out every few
blocks. He said, "When you see it shake, holler." It started getting weak. We
hollered and he ran. It came straight down and did no damage to buildings
around it. It was very successful, a huge domino effect! I've never seen
anyone else do that.
