Page 234 - Stand Down Vietnam
P. 234
I hold each person who has served and is currently
serving in our nation’s armed forces in the highest
regard.
It was not always easy getting the Veterans of this
book to share their stories. Their self-awareness and
perspectives of the Vietnam War were enlightening. The
content of each story is “in their own words”, without
editing content, emotion or purpose.
We must use our new-found knowledge to support and
defend our nation and its values.
As it was for Soldiers Anthology, the process of
gathering each story was rewarding. Each shared word
took on meaning and purpose. It was the “back-story”
that opened my eyes and touched my consciousness.
I am not certain, but perhaps because I am a Vietnam-
Era Veteran, they were willing to let their emotions
run free.
My gratitude for what I have today includes such
“little” things as freedom of speech; knowing that
without the dedication and sacrifices of our military
personnel the definition would be significantly
altered.
My sense of commitment becomes stronger each day I
witness the ever-growing challenges to our
constitutional guarantees.
For whatever reason, there is a tentativeness about
affirming our personal principles.
