When we arrived at New River, we were told they can’t
use him there because of his rank. They sent us to
Cherry Point. There were twenty-six inches of snow on
the ground. We had cardboard boxes from the packing
company that the kids used as sleds. They had never
been in the snow. They made tunnels out of the boxes
and all the kids played in the snow.
Our assignment to Cherry Point was good. It was
smaller but close enough to use the Main Base
facilities, Base Exchange, Commissary, etc.
Kenneth and I both were very involved with the Girl
Scouts on this assignment. We had over two-hundred-
fifty girl scouts. He was the trainer for the scouts.
I think this was the best Girl Scout organization I was
ever involved with.
I made a difference while we were in the Marine Corps
by being a supportive wife and I kept the home fires
burning.
My message for the next generation is that if you are
going to do something, do it well. Don’t make excuses.
If you undertake something, do it to the best of your
ability.
We invited Denny into our home, and I’m glad he came,
because our grandchildren, need to know. They know how
papaw was in the war and that he was in the Marine
Corps; they don’t know any of the details.
