Fort Meade, Circa, 1940

Oneita rode a train to school one year because they did not have a school bus. The train would toot-toot
its horn and she would flag it down for the ride to school. She never knew when it was coming back to
take her home and sometimes it was as late as seven or maybe ten o’clock at night before she got home.

                                                         World War II

I had a brother – two years older - that was also drafted and served in the army. He was sent out west
and developed hearing problems. His training at the rifle range in the army destroyed his hearing. He did
               not serve overseas.

                                                                                                           3
As luck would have it, I had a close friend - Truman Wells - that was also going to Camp Myles Standish ,
Massachusetts. I gave up a day of my leave so my friend and I could ship out together.
