Oneita knew I was going into the army, but she was not there to see me off. After my leave Truman and I
travelled by train to Camp Myles Standish to await transfer to Liverpool, England. I was amazed that the
mess hall could feed thousands of soldiers at each meal. It was a sight to behold.
It meant a lot to me to have a friend to talk to and share concerns with on the ship to England. You knew

where you were going, and you were not happy. It helped to have a friend . Once we arrived in
England, we were separated.
USS Wakefield (AP-21)
After only a few days, Truman and I were taken to Boston – it just happens to have been D-Day when we
shipped out - to board the USS Wakefield for transport to England. Once we arrived in England, we
4
were separated. Truman passed away in February 2014. I miss my old friend a lot.
