He developed a plan called "Vietnamization" whereby the
U.S. would steadily withdraw from the war. His plan
would leave the fighting to the South Vietnamese army.
American ground troop levels in Vietnam remained high.
The Nixon administration extended the war into Laos and
Cambodia.
In 1973, during Nixon's final year in office, the last
U.S. combat soldiers left Vietnam.
Military advisors and a small contingent of Marines
remained.
