Gerald R. Ford
38 President of the United States
th
1974 – 1977
Gerald R. Ford was the first person appointed to the
Vice Presidency under the terms of the 25th Amendment
after Spiro Agnew resigned.
When he became president following Nixon's resignation
on August 9, 1974, he became the first person to have
served as both Vice President and President of the
United States without being elected.
One of Ford's greatest challenges was the ongoing
Vietnam War.
American offensive operations against North Vietnam had
ended. The Paris Peace Accords required total
withdrawal of U.S. forces.
Ford requested aid for South Vietnam; the funds had
been promised by President Nixon before his
resignation. Ford’s requests were not approved by
Congress.
