     Lyndon B. Johnson
36th president of the United States
                                                      1963 - 1969
               Following President Kennedy’s assassination, Johnson
               assumed the presidency.
“I guess we’ve got no choice, but it scares the death
out of me. I think everybody’s going to think, ‘we’re
landing the Marines, and we’re off to battle.’”
                                       President Lyndon B. Johnson
                                                   March 6, 1965
The war in Vietnam was escalating into a calamity.
Johnson assured the nation that he would bring a swift
               end to American involvement.
He increased the number of U.S. troops deployed to
Vietnam in hopes of a U.S. victory before withdrawing
               forces.
Johnson hoped he wouldn't be the first American
               president to lose a war.
