Ngo Dinh Diem
President of South Vietnam
A resolutely anti-communist Vietnamese statesman; he
rejected the policy and philosophy of Ho Chi Minh after
the Franco-Vietnamese War. Diem was an unpopular and
disliked leader; he was known for his obsessions and
his insensitivity. Many South Vietnamese resented and
feared his authoritarian policies. Historians and
politicians alike believe his brutality gave rise to
the National Liberation Front (NLF) and the Viet Cong.
He was assassinated alongside his brother in a military
coup.
