Time for an honesty check:
Did you continue reading without trying at least steps 1 and 2?
If you replied yes: Busted: But, take it easy; you have company.
I conducted this challenge with a small group (23) of my college students.
Result:
o Steps 1 and 2:
o Eighteen students were successful
o Three students ended the challenge when it came time to eat lunch
o Two students thought the challenge to be stupid and declined to participate
o Steps 1 thru 4:
o One student completed the challenge but required the help of his mother and
friends
o Five students were able to participate for three hours then returned to steps 1
and 2 for the remaining hours
o Eight students gave up; stated that they “understood” the environment and the
stigma
o Seven students were able to participate for two hours then stopped participating;
but, stated that they also “understood” the environment and the stigma
o Two students continued to think about the challenge to be stupid and declined to
participate.
o Steps 5 thru 7:
o All twenty-three students participated in a modified wheelchair challenge. None
agreed to tie their feet.
o The fill in the blank section received one unanimous response:
o “unmanageable”
o None of the students believed he or she could live a “normal” life with even one
unusable hand
o None of the students attempted the “at work” portion of the challenge.
o All students stated it would be impossible and unproductive to attempt the
challenge at work or school.
