But, contrary to what many think, all too often the therapy aspect is more harmful and the drugs are
addicting. Many VA doctors will stake their career on therapy without acknowledging that many, if not
most Veterans, will not fully participate or will remain in denial of the events and actions.
Recall my “dis-remember” statement: The ability to “dis-remember” becomes a worthwhile tool.
I base this statement on hundreds of discussions, over many years, with fellow Veterans, while at my VA
doctor’s appointments.
My experience is that most of us just want to be left alone.
Therapy is considered a sign of weakness. It was true on active duty and it remains true within civilian
society.
I’m certain of this.
How?
Therapy is a sign of weakness because that is what I was told by my superiors and peers time and time
again during my twenty-two-year service.
My personal experience is that creating an environment in which I am expected to dwell on the
experiences is not helpful.
I choose to channel and forget: “dis-remember”.
I do not want to revisit and tell all. Exception: This book – with the help of my wife.
I want to live in that most sought after Zip Code: Denial.
