THE MAN THAT BECAME MY FATHER
DH
THE PITCHER AND THE CATCHER
My mother met Charlie, the man that would become my stepfather. She
remarried when I was about ten.
Her new husband’s glory years were behind him. He earned a meager wage.
He lived in a small “Tear-Drop” trailer parked next to us. It was a strange
sight to see such a large man enter and exit that small trailer. The trailer
would later become our camping accommodations.
My stepfather smoked smelly cigars all day long and drank beer every night.
His glory years involved playing baseball in college, the minor leagues, and a
short time with a professional team. Then he was hurt in a car accident. The
glory was over; he had few skills.
