CONFESSION
Richard and I were known to drop by a local motel to have a soda pop. But
the back-story is about the soda machine.
The machine was outside and had exposed bottles. It was easy to pop the top
and use a straw to enjoy an ice-cold “free” soda.
Twenty years later I was home on leave from the army. My brother took me
to visit the owners of the motel. It was an interesting visit. He and his wife
had seen us (and other kids) enjoying the free drinks. They laughed and told
me I owed them $32.75 for the sodas. Life in a small town has its benefits
and its drawbacks. Everyone knew everyone; we couldn’t get away with
much.
