Harry S. Truman
33 President of the United States
rd
1945 - 1953
During World War I, Truman served in combat in France
as an artillery officer.
Truman disregarded Ho’s 1946 appeal for support of
independence from colonialism by France.
Many historians believe this was yet another occurrence
of Vietnam being turned away by the Americans.
Was an opportunity to solve the question of Vietnamese
independence missed by the Truman administration?
By 1947, working closely with Congress, Truman assisted
in the founding of the United Nations and issued the
Truman Doctrine to contain communism.
No official policy against colonialism was mentioned
during the Truman administration.
