I was on my way to Mannheim, Germany. The Wasserturm
(Water Tower) shown below would become my sanctuary
from the stress. I would ride the German “Strasse”
(streetcar) from Spinelli Barracks to downtown Mannheim
to watch the colorful nightly water display.

                                             Mannheim with Wasserturm

I was assigned to the 14th General Supply Company, 56th
Supply and Service Battalion, 1st Support Brigade, of
the U.S. Seventh Army, United States Army Europe
(USAEUR). We became stevedores: Fancy name for box
               handlers.
