Twelve years pass; I write A Soldier’s Anthology, Storytelling by America’s
Veterans, The Kentucky Connection.
A Soldier’s Anthology is a book of veteran’s stories told in their own words.
An interesting aspect of the book is the answer to a question posed to me by
Mrs. Bertha Hoover, one of the participants. “Why are you doing this?” My
answer: “If I can touch just one person, a single individual, with these stories,
it will have been worth the effort and the expense.” Turns out it touched
many people, perhaps most significantly, me.
The lessons learned from those twenty-three people caused me to pause and
evaluate my life. Where did I come from? What was life really like in
Charleston? Why had my mother so hardheartedly admonished: “It is best
left alone.”?
